This senior engineering leadership role carries full accountability for the safe, legally compliant and commercially effective delivery of customer-facing engineering operations across a critical energy infrastructure business on the island of Ireland. The scope is broad - spanning regulatory compliance, field operations, technical governance, team leadership and budget management - and requires someone equally confident in a boardroom and on-site. The organisation operates in a highly regulated environment and this role is its primary engineering authority.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
• Serve as the organisation’s lead technical authority on customer-side critical energy infrastructure busines compliance across the island of Ireland.
• Maintain full compliance with applicable Irish gas safety legislation, HSA and CRU regulatory requirements, and relevant standards including IS 813, IS 820, IS 3216, EN standards and EU directives.
• Develop and oversee robust safety management frameworks, including audit programmes and site inspection regimes.
• Lead engagement with regulatory bodies and manage formal audit processes.
• Ensure all contractors and third-party providers operate within company and statutory compliance requirements.
Engineering Operations
• Oversee the full range of customer engineering activities - including bulk and cylinder LPG installations, site modifications and removals, and both planned and reactive service and maintenance programmes.
• Drive consistent delivery against safety, quality, cost and schedule standards.
• Identify and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and customer outcomes.
Technical Governance
• Act as the technical escalation point across the business for complex or non-standard engineering matters.
• Review and sign off engineering designs, technical specifications and installation proposals.
• Maintain the organisation’s engineering standards, procedures and policies.
• Provide technical input and guidance to Sales, Operations and Commercial teams.
People & Team Development
• Lead and develop a geographically dispersed engineering team, setting clear performance expectations and development plans.
• Embed a strong safety-first culture throughout the team and contractor base.
• Manage contractor relationships - assessing capability, monitoring performance and enforcing compliance.
• Plan for long-term capability and succession within the engineering function.
Financial Management
• Hold full budget responsibility for Customer Engineering OPEX and CAPEX.
• Develop annual budget proposals and manage spend against agreed targets.
• Balance cost control with uncompromised safety and service delivery standards.
• Identify and deliver efficiency improvements across the function.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Maintain effective working relationships with Commercial, Sales, Operations, Supply and HSE teams.
• Act as the engineering interface with external regulators, inspection bodies and engineering partners.
• Step in to support the resolution of escalated customer engineering issues.
The Person We’re Looking For
This role requires a technically credible leader with a background in the LPG, gas or utilities sector - or an equivalent regulated engineering environment. You will have led field-based engineering teams, operated as a technical authority and made confident risk-based decisions under pressure. Commercial and financial literacy is essential; you will be comfortable building and managing budgets at both OPEX and CAPEX level.
Direct experience within the Irish critical energy infrastructure business market and managing large contractor networks would be a significant advantage. A relevant engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification is required.
